At the G20 2025 South Africa Summit, I had the privilege of delivering a masterclass to selected SMMEs on behalf of Microsoft and their partner Nokulunga Consulting.
The session was called “Sip and Prompt” — a fitting name for a practical, hands-on experience where business owners could literally sip their coffee while learning how to prompt AI tools effectively to transform their operations.
And what an experience it was.
The Reality of an SMME Owner
If you run an SMME, you already know this truth:
You are the CEO.
You are the marketer.
You are the finance department.
You are HR.
You are operations.
Sometimes, you are even IT support.
Wearing multiple hats is not a choice — it’s survival.
But what if AI could become the one “team member” that never sleeps, never complains, and helps you think faster, write better, analyse quicker, and execute smarter?
That’s exactly what we unpacked. Below I will provide a synopsis of what was covered, unfortunately you can only read about it unlike the lucky SMME’s that experienced the fun and insights live.
Sip and Prompt: Turning AI into a Business Assistant
The focus of the masterclass was practical application — not theory.
We explored how SMMEs can use Microsoft Copilot to:

- Draft professional emails in seconds
- Generate client proposals
- Create meeting summaries automatically
- Build reports without starting from scratch
Time saved is money earned.
2️⃣ Improve Financial Clarity
We demonstrated how AI can:
- Help interpret financial statements

- Forecast simple cash flow scenarios
- Explain financial jargon in plain language
Many small businesses don’t fail because they lack passion — they struggle because they lack clarity. AI can help bridge that gap.

Using AI prompts, we showed how to:

One of the biggest takeaways from “Sip and Prompt” was this:
AI is only as powerful as the questions you ask it.
We focused on structured prompting:

- Objective
- Constraints
- Desired output
When SMME owners learn how to “speak AI,” they unlock efficiency that previously required full teams.
AI Is Not Replacing Entrepreneurs — It’s Empowering Them
There’s often fear around AI.
But what I emphasized at the summit is this:
AI will not replace SMME owners.
SMME owners who use AI will outperform those who don’t.
The goal is not automation for the sake of automation.
The goal is amplification — of ideas, productivity, and impact.
A Personal Reflection
Representing Microsoft and Nokulunga Consulting at a global platform like the G20 Summit was deeply meaningful.
South African SMMEs are resilient. They innovate under pressure. They create jobs where none existed. They build communities.
Equipping them with AI tools like Copilot is not just about technology — it’s about economic empowerment.
If a small business owner can:

- Improve decision quality,
- Reduce operational stress,
That’s transformational.
